Etimologia

Il nome generico mwfaEnteroctopus fu creato da Alphonse Tremeau de Rochebrune e mwfgJules François Mabille nel mwfw1887 e pubblicato nel mwga1889, mwgqdal greco antico ἔντερον?, énteron ("intestino") e ὀκτώπους, oktṓpous ("con otto piedi"), quindi «animale con otto piedi [con le zampe/braccia a forma di] tubo intestinale»cite-ref-2[2].

Descrizione

La specie a cui più si addice il nome di «polpo gigante» è mwiamwiqEnteroctopus dofleini, a cui appartiene il più grande polpo conosciuto, un esemplare del peso di 71mwig kgcite-ref-3[3]. Può superare i 3 metri di lunghezza. Le altre specie sono invece molto più piccole: mwjwE. megalocyathus, ad esempio, raggiunge al massimo i 4mwka kg di peso e un metro di lunghezzacite-ref-perez-4-0[4]cite-ref-5[5]. mwmqE. magnificus raggiunge una lunghezza massima di 1,5 mcite-ref-norman03-6-0[6].

Il corpo delle varie specie di mwnwEnteroctopus è ricoperto da caratteristiche frange carnose che si estendono in senso longitudinale sia sul dorso che sui lati. La testa è molto più piccola del mantello. L'ectocotile dei maschi, situato sul terzo tentacolo destro, è lungo e sottile rispetto a quello di altre specie di mwoaoctopodidi e spesso occupa un quinto della lunghezza del tentacolo.cite-ref-norman03-6-1[6]cite-ref-hoch98-7-0[7]

Distribuzione e habitat

Le specie del genere mwqwEnteroctopus sono ristrette alle aree temperate di entrambi gli emisferi. mwraE. dofleini è l'unica specie diffusa nell'emisfero boreale ed è anche quella dall'areale più vasto: esso va, infatti, da mwrqSan Diego (mwrgCalifornia) al mwrwGiappone, comprendendo anche il mwsaMare di Okhotsk e quello mwsqdi Beringcite-ref-hoch98-7-1[7]. Le altre tre specie vivono solo nell'emisfero australe: mwtgE. megalocyathus lungo le coste sud-orientali del mwtwSudamericacite-ref-ceph-8-0[8], mwvaE. magnificus lungo le coste sud-occidentali dell'mwvqAfrica, dalla mwvgNamibia a mwvwPort Elizabeth (mwwaSudafrica), ed mwwqE. zealandicus nelle acque temperate della mwwgNuova Zelandacite-ref-norman03-6-2[6].
